Organising your shoot

You should have one post of a series of short posts showing that you have planned ahead and that you are as ready for your shoot as possible.

SHOW YOUR PLANNING FOR THE DAY - AND BRING IT WITH YOU!

Shooting schedule (what will you shot, in which order, at what time?), including where, when, what time do people meet, what does each person bring, what NOT to forget, what documents to bring (preferably in a folder), how to get there, weather forecast (particularly if shooting outside), who brings make up, costumes props, who dresses the set, who applies make up and where + will they have guidance? Have a got a plan B? A list to make sure that everything is returned at the end of the day?

Planning

What you should have when it's completed:

- Brief details about your band/artist, including which record label they're signed to, what their ideology is and who their target audience is (audience profile)

- Moodboard

- Synopsis of the video, including details of performance and/or narrative elements, location shots, costume/props images

- Shot list for each sequence

- Storyboard

- Aim for an animatic

- Explanation of how you have used Goodwin's elements within the video OR how they are subverted. Explanation of how you have used Vernallis' points.

- Explanation of WHY you have decided on this concept and HOW it will appeal to the target audience and 'fit' into the music industry.

– discussion of any influences you have had.

- Keep asking for class and teacher feedback as well as target audience feedback. This must go your blog and you must adapt your ideas accordingly. Use questionnaire or/and focus groups. Use social media / online survey.

- Your audience research should include a consumption profile of your target audience. It should also refer to Uses and Gratifications Theory.

- Actors / Casting / possibly auditions

- You should conduct a recce.

- Schedule.

Ask for hep at any point and remember to support each other. Below is a little more help to help you define your research.

1. Gathering more information on your target audience. Here is a link to the media pack published by a magazine:
http://www.mhpromo.co.uk/MP_11.pdf

Look through the pack to see how the target audience is described in detail.

Also look through last year's blogs to see examples of Audience Profiles and Audience Consumption Profiles.

Music Video Treatment

You will be presenting next week (probably on Wednesday). This is part of your PLANNING.

The more thought you put into this and the more visual you make it, the easier the rest of the planning will be.
Refer to the bullet points we gave you.

Next steps: Shot list, Storyboard, shooting schedule...

Inspiration - Effects in Music videos

I need to see a little more evidence that you are researching similar products / other videos to find inspiration from, particularly in the mise-en-scene, style and effects. (See mark scheme for Research and Planning - first point)
Remember that we have an extensive playlist on the YouTube channel
I have found a great post from another centre featuring some more interesting videos to learn from:

The Wretch 32 video below use stencilling, depth of field and reflections to good effect:

This Ellie Goulding video uses vintage colour, bokeh and depth of field.

Bokeh effect:

Use of Cyanotype:

Cross Process and stunning colour corrector:

Use of text:

Now look at this student's video - Several of you are using a male and female characters... Look at the lovely framing, particularly when she is walking on the beach at the start and when we see his first close-up.

Plus lots of other effects!

Research and Planning

You all know that there are many things to have in placeon your blogs. Target audience research and questions of representation, moodboard, wordle of initial ideas, annotated lyrics, animatic, shot list etc... You should also be looking for suitable location.
If you're planning on holding auditions or have already found your actors, post that too. Any research on costumes, props etc... should start appearing too. Email if you're unsure but make sure you make good use of all reference materials first.

Some of you only have one Goodwin analysis; you should have a minimum of 3, preferably of videos / artists similar to your chosen one.

You need to invest the time! Good luck.

Research, Planning, Pitch, Treatment

FIRST:
Next Wednesday you will pitch your ideas to the class for feedback.

You need to have done several things before then. Firstly, agree and post the following as soon as possible if not already done:
1 Who the band/ artist are, their name, their image/ identity (the one you are creating)
2 An outline treatment for your early visual ideas
3 Detail on the target audience
4. The genre of the music and the signifiers of this (within the music and/or linked to the artist)

RESEARCH AND PLANNING - TREATMENT
Your treatment should give a strong sense of the overall style, mise-en-scene, mood and theme of your idea.
There are many things to have in place by next week:
Target audience research
moodboard
wordle / brainstorm of initial ideas
annotated lyrics + timeline

You should be able to discuss your treatment in terms of Goodwin's points (and
if you can, try to reference Vernallis' ideas)

You should also be looking for suitable location.

If you're planning on holding auditions or have already found your actors, post that too.
Any research on costumes, props ... (mise-en-scene) should start appearing too.

Use the reference material you have been given to guide you.

Here are some examples of a good treatment:

You need to get started with some serious audience research as well. Use this to get started:

Then it'll be time for shot list and storyboards.

Monday's lesson (17.10.11) and Shotlists/Storyboards deadline

As you were told last week, should you want to do a photo shoot for your digipak or a bit of filming in school, you can use some of Monday's lessons to do so, provided you can show Mr Molloy your planning for it. Shotlists and Storyboards should really be finalised by the end of the lesson if you haven't yet finished them, and the evidence uploaded to blogs.

An animatic would be a welcome addition; I showed you some from Hurtwood that you can find on their YouTube channel.

If you haven't posted all this (shotlists/storyboards) by Wednesday night at the latest, you'll need to come back at lunch on Thursday to get it done, and if necessary after school.

15 October 2011

SET 15.10.11 Planning - storyboard and shotlist and ancillary tasks

Shotlists and storyboards need to be posted as soon as possible.
You must also post the pre-production work I know you've been doing - sequences, annotated lyrics, costumes and props, locations ...
You need as much evidence of planning as possible on your blog.

Here is a link to examples of album covers and their respective magazine adverts. I'll be adding a few more shortly.
Many of you haven't yet posted your rough digipak design. Please do so. You will be investigating mag adverts after half term but do look at these models now.

Finally, this is an example of a STUDENT'S EVALUATION of their project. It is not perfect but gives you some idea of how much RESEARCH should be done.

UPDATED: Representation in your music video and planning your shoot

1. REPRESENTATION: Write about Representation in your music video (at least about your intentions) focusing on your artist and on gender representations, or maybe representation of youth (Josh, Mathhew, Manan).
Don't forget to read again the article we looked at in class on representation of women in music videos [Friendly advice if you want to do well next week]
And here's the Prezi I mentioned on representations of masculinity - plenty of ideas here to get you writing.
Remember to mention the conventional representation of gender for your music genre then comment on how far you will be conforming to these conventions in your own video.

Prezi on Representation of Masculinity

2.PLANNING: Meanwhile, make sure that you act on all the things you've planned to do today.
Get on with your planning: costumes, props, locations, schedule, shot list, storyboard.

MAKE SURE THAT YOUR SHOOTING SCHEDULE IS IN PLACE ASAP - test shoots and some of your shoot should happen next week, over half-term and possibly extra shoot in the week after half-term. You will start uploading and editing in the first week back after half-term so you need some footage!

3. RESEARCH:
- Audience: Many of you are still missing some basic information about your target audience. This is an early entry from last year: Chloe's early audience research
Of course, all the research you are conducting should be there too, either confirming or reappraising your early findings.

- Similar products: you need to continue studying the conventions of similar artists / videos, using Goodwin AND Vernallis , and many screengrabs for ideas on how to shoot / style /edit your video.
ONE FULL GOODWIN ANALYSIS MUST BE BROUGHT TO THURSDAY'S LESSON FOR ASSESSMENT.

Use the pod when you can and email or see me if there's any problem/question.

Research and Planning

You all know that there are many things to have in place by next week. Target audience research and questions of representation, moodboard, wordle of initial ideas and picture of your ideas on sugar paper done in class, annotated lyrics... You should also be looking for suitable location. If you haven't yet posted your pitch, it should be there too on your blog.

Bring a hard copy of your best one for your assessment book.

COMING SOON: STORYBOARD / ANIMATIC

Refining your marketing strategy

You need to start thinking about pulling all the threads together in terms of your marketing campaign / promotional package. Use the research you've done on labels on music TV to work out which would represent / play your artist. Think about your Digipack and how it will tie in with your audience research. Use the work you've done on established artists to help you map out everything.

Below you will find bits and bobs to help further hopefully:

Think of labels for your music genre / type of band or artist.

Remember to work on your CD cover and digipack:
Think about:
1. images used (layout, colour, style etc) text (fonts, size, positioning, colour etc) The relationship between text and images - how do they work together i.e. anchorage, differing functions of the front, back, inside sleeve
2. how the iconography represents the band, the genre of music and their overall image.
3. are there any signifiers exclusive to the band/genre
4. what the cover says about the institutional context of the music ie the label, mainstream, underground, first album etc
5. what can we learn about the potential/target audience from the cover ie specialist, niche, familiarity with the band, compilation, mainstream etc.
6. and anything else of relevance, including influences from similar (real) products.
You will have a lesson on Magazine adverts next week but you could start thinking about where a magazine ad would appear.

Finally, remember to refine your audience research using the technology available.

Creating a form

You could try and use this site to build a form for audience research and feedback.

Look at this example from another school; this is a good exercise to plan your marketing campaign. I don't have access to the results page however since I did not create this one!

Pete Fraser's advice - A2 Music Video

Here is the post from Pete Fraser's blog mentioned today at the conference. I told you to try and do an animatic...

Home Learning - Research and Planning

You should be in the midst of research and planning, particularly focusing on your treatment and storyboard, locations and costumes etc. As ever, illustrate with lots of screengrabs or clips. Take pictures to show progress, thinking, make up and costumes, props and locations. Start taking pictures of or scanning storyboard frames (particularly effective if compared to existing shots from videos).

Use the sheet with two sides (Goodwin / Vernallis) to plot your ideas / treatment against the different items listed there. You will do this again later with the finished product.

Do remember your Pitch feedback and Audience Research. Refer to work set in class.

Two of the Required Reading extracts carried questions - these should be completed and the answers posted on your blog before half-term.

Please keep referring to your Assessment pack and plot your progress where indicated; also keep referring to the Criteria. We will have a look at your Assessment packs on Tuesday and parents / guardians must countersign at least once before half-term.

Record Labels Research anyone?

Please catch up. Maybe focus on specific labels looking at the kind of artists they represent. Contrast two or more. Finally, link that to your own track - who is likely to sign your act etc.?

Preparing the Pitch

Next Tuesday you will pitch your ideas to the class for feedback.

You need to have done several things before then. Firstly, agree and post the following as soon as possible if not already done:
1 who the band/ artist are, their name, their image/ identity
2 an outline treatment for your early visual ideas
3 Detail on the target audience – see last week's task and use some of the audience reseach methods mentioned in class (use Web 2.0 for instance)

Next week, you will need to present the following:

1. The track itself
2. What you know about the track, and the original band/artist
3. The genre of the music and the signifiers of this (within the music and/or linked to the artist)
4. The target audience you intend to appeal to
5. Your treatment for the video which should include visual references (stills and video)
6. Your treatment should give a strong sense of the overall style, mise-en-scene, mood and theme of your idea.
7. You should be able to discuss your treatment in terms of Goodwin's points (and
if you can, try to reference Vernallis' ideas)

Aim for 6-10 minutes. Use your blog for your visual aids, BUT your treatment should be printed in colour as a handout. Be prepared to answer questions, discuss feedback, note it down and adapt your treatment for Thursday's lesson.
